Proposed Coastal Walkway Onehunga Foreshore

Proposed Coastal Walkway Manukau Harbour

Auckland Council and the Puketepapa Local Board are proposing to develop a coastal walkway from the reserve land at 1A Bamfield Place to the Onehunga Foreshore Reclamation (Orpheus Drive). It is envisioned that in future this walkway will form part of a continuous coastal walkway along the inner reaches of the Manukau Harbour.

The majority of the walkway is to be a raised timber boardwalk, approximately 400m long by 2.5m wide, located on council owned reserve land and in the coastal marine area. It is intended to set the boardwalk back from the cliffs to avoid effects on vegetation and to minimise potential risk associated with any areas of unstable cliff. It will also be located at a sufficient height so it can be used at high tide and to avoid damage from coastal processes.

In order to develop an appropriate design, whilst minimising any potential environmental effects we are seeking input from a landscape architect, ecologist, geotechnical engineer, coastal engineer, archaeologist and arborist. We will also be discussing the project with Vector, Transpower, Watercare and Iwi.

The boardwalk will require building consent and resource consent and it is intended to have the boardwalk constructed by August 2015.
